This piece is my first work with the Roland V-synth. I created the patch by replacing a sample in an existing patch with a short orchestral chord that I had processed externally in Audacity.
The basic track is was played straight through and recorded in 2 tracks in Audacity. At the time I did this, I didn't have midi recording capability nor did I know how to save the patch so it was lost when I shut down.
The night I recorded this some friends staged an intervention for a friend who was experiencing real problems with alcohol. Thinking about my friend's situation sets the melancholy mood for the piece.
A few weeks later I came up with words.
I wasn't until I upgraded to the modest emu 0404 PCI sound card that I got midi recording capabilities and started using Cubase LE, which was used to complete this recording.
The biggest challenge to finishing the arrangement was the complete absence of a regular meter in the initial performance. Most of the time spent was trying to build a rhythmic framework that the various parts could synchronize with.
The thing I like the best about this piece is the random way the V synth played when I was doing the original recording, just like an old analogue system. As the melody climbs the sounds start a reverse envelop. I have no idea how that happened. It was really fun riding the patch and trying to get some form happening in real time.
lyrics
I don’t want to feel like this.
I don’t want to die
I don’t want to feel at all
and I’m afraid to cry
In a place where love is lost.
I don’t want to feel like this.
I’m falling, I don’t want to, I’m falling,
I don’t want to, I’m falling, I don’t want to.
